Ulta3 - Big Book of Nails & nail art tool kit

Hey everyone. Tonight I'm bringing you details about Ulta3's latest nail product release, called the Big Book of Nails - your guide of four easy nail art looks.  First up, just a little recap for my non-Aussie readers.  Ulta3 is Australia's top selling nail polish brand. It sells for $2 a bottle, comes in a huge range of colours and finishes and is really exceptional quality for the price. It's sold at supermarkets and chemists/drug stores and can be a bit of pot luck as to what you will find in stock at your local store.

Here is the big book of nails, the front of the box and the back of the box.

Open up the big book of nails and you will find 16 bottles of Ulta3 polish and four easily explained nail art tutorials. My only complaint is the photoshopped hand on each of the tutorial pictures.  It's the exact same hand photo on each, with the nail art photo shopped onto each nail.  I'd much rather see real nails with real examples of the nail art.  But hey, that's what I'm here for, to show you real swatches of their nail art tutorials.

The polishes that come in the big book of nails are:
  • Top row: pink peony, pale dahila, lilac bloom & corscain rose
  • Second row: fresh squeezed, fruit punch, tahitian lime & tangello twist
  • Third row: black satin, sizzling red, lily white & hollywood
  • Bottom row: over the rainbow, twinkle toes, gold rush fever, silver grey.
The other thing Ulta3 has released at the same time as the big book of nails is this nail art tool kit. The kit comes with a double sided dotting tool, a fine nail art brush, a couple of nail art sponges for creating gradients and a round metal plate for putting your polish on during your nail art adventures.

Lets start with the first tutorial - Gradient manicure. Here is the tutorial provided on the box.

"Tools required: 2 shades of nail polish, sponge (you can use a disposable cosmetic sponge wedge if you don't have a nail art sponge), a metal mixing plate (or a paper plate).

Shades used here: pink peony and pale dahlia.

Start out by painting your nails with 2 coats of the lighest of your chosen shades. Pour a few drops of your chosen colours side by side onto the metal mixing plate. Pat the sponge onto the disk so that is picks up both colours and then pat it against your nails until you get the desired gradient effect."

I chose to use my disposable makeup sponges, and I also didn't use the metal mixing plate. Instead I paint the two polish colours directly onto the sponge and then pat it onto the nail.  Here is my finished look.  The effect is very similar to the picture provided, although pale dahlia (which is the lightest colour) is much paler in my manicure than in the photos on the box.

I decided to add one more gradient element to my manicure, using another polish from the box.  I did a simple glitter gradient using twinkle toes.

Onto tutorial number two - Tape manicure.  Here is the tutorial provided on the box.

"Tools required: Three shades nail polish, scotch tape.

Shade used here: fresh squeezed, tangello twist and fruit punch.

Paint your nals with 2 coats of the lightest shade, and wait for it to be dry completely. Place a piece of tape diagonally from middle of the finger nail to the tip. Paint the entire nail, including the tape, with the next lighest colour. Remove the tape immediately, before the nail polish dries.  Once this layer is completely dry, place another piece of tape diagonally from the mddle of the nail to the base (in the opposite direction as the first piece). Paint the entire nail with the final colour and gently remove the tape."

Ok, I'm not a patient person, so here is the truth as to what I did for this manicure. I didn't actually use scotch tape.  I just painted my lines freehand using the nail art brush in the Ulta3 nail art tool kit.  By doing it free hand it meant I didn't have to wait for it to be totally dry, it just had to be seche vite dry.  This one looked very accurate to the pictures, although I have to say that the orange shade, tangello twist, is actually fluro orange - which doesn't show in either my photos or the box photos.

Manicure number three - Dot manicure.  Here is the tutorial provided on the box.

"Tools required: 2 shades of nail polish, dotting tool (you can use a tool [sic] pick or flat-headed pin stuck into the eraser-head of a pencil).

Shades used here: Black satin, lily white.

Start with 2 coats of your lightest shade. Once completely dry, dip the tip of your dotting tool into your second shade and begin dotting. You can randomly place the dots, or create any desired pattern."

The design in the tutorial is a white base with black dots. I decided to make it a little more interesting and use all four polish colours provided on this row in the box.  I used the double sided dotting tool from the ulta3 nail art tool kit and found it to work beautifully.  You know what, I've never actually created a dotticure before!! I love them and think you might be seeing more of them!

Ok, last turotial - glitter manicure. Here is the tutorial provided on the box.

"Tools required: one shade of solid colour, one shade of glitter.

Shade used here: silver grey, over the rainbow.

Paint one to two coats of your solid colour. Once completely dry, coat with a layer of glitter. Repeat until you have the desired thickness of glitter."

Right, so I'm not totally convinced that a glitter manicure actually counts as nail art, but here it is anyway.  I tried to mix it up a little bit and instead of just doing a single glitter on the base colour, I did some two toned glitter with the silver glitter twinkle toes and over the rainbow. I also did the reverse direction of the glitter polishes on my ring finger.

The Ulta3 Big Book of Nails is available now. Check the Ulta3 Stockist Locator to find your nearest stockist and ask any questions on the Ulta3 Facebook page. The book costs $21.95 and the nail art tool kit is $9.95.  The book contains 16 polishes, so represents a saving of more than $10 compared to buying the polishes individually.  These would make an awesome Christmas gift if you are the sort of person that likes to plan ahead.

Winner of Ulta3 Glitterati Collection Haiku Competition

Thanks to everyone for your wonderful entries in my Haiku competition to win the full Glitterati Collection from Ulta3.

Now I wasn't very strict with the syllables for the Haiku's, I pretty much considered everyone's entry.

I have a couple of special mentions, but sadly you don't get a prize, you just get to feel good about yourself :)

I liked this one from Nail Jems...
She's a showstopper
with that striking mani
a real A-lister!
..and this one from Alilovessparkles
Striking new colors
An entire new collection
Eager to try them'
This one from Kat Daniels was my winner until an entry on the last day.  What I like about this one was the connection it made with me. I made me think of the afternoon I spent with my nail buddies the weekend before last where we painted our nails, gossiped, smiled and laughed.
Warm winter evening,
We paint our nails and Gossip
Smiling and laughing
But this one from M that came through on Sunday afternoon touched my heart and is my winner.
Silver cat outside
The winds cut all to shreds
She is glamourpuss
You see both my mum and I are people that have taken in many a stray kitty at our back door.  Sometimes you'd just see a little silver flash of a kitty darting past the back door, after eating the food we put out for them.  They often looked so sad with bedraggled fur coats that really were cut to shreds by the cold winds.  And the word M chose from the polish collection was "glamourpuss", which reminded me of one of my very kitties as a child "Shelly" whom we always referred to as Grizabella the Glamour cat, in reference to the musical 'Cats'.  So you can see why I chose this one as the winner, it was just right for me in so many ways.

M - please send me an email with your details so I can post out the package.  Please reply within 2 days or I will offer the prize to Kat.

Ulta3 - Glitteratti Collection + giveaway

Epic post for you tonight featuring all eleven new shades released from Aussie brand Ulta3 in the Glitterati Collection.  Ulta3 have really stepped it up with this collection.  For a brand with a large proportion of cremes in its range, here is an eleven piece collection without a single creme.  I've forty odd photos to get through, so lets start.

Celebutant - vibrant pink foil.  Great smooth formula and opacity at two coats.

Glamourpuss - a very fine particle silver foil. Great smooth formula and opaque with two thin coats.

Infamous - WOW, stunning polish!  Fine teal blue glitters in a teal blue jelly base. Again WOW, this is only a $2 bottle of polish.  Colour me impressed. Opaque in three thin coats and only needs one coat of top coat.  I'm so glad it's not a hungry glitter.

Striking - double WOW, this one has fine aqua glitters in an aqua jelly base. Opaque in three thin coats and smooth with one layer of Seche Vite.

Triple threat - a black jelly base with fine red, blue and silver holographic glitter. Opaque in two coats but dries a little grittier than the previous two polishes. This is two coats with Seche Vite.

XOXO- multicoloured iridescent micro flakes or coloured glass flecks.  This is two coats over black first

XOXO- two coats over OPI Samoan Sand.

Outasight - Matte black glitter in two sizes in a clear base.  The glitter is on the sparse side, my glitter tips have two coats.  A nice black glitter for $2.

Gossip  - Magenta pink hexes in two sizes in a clear base.  This is two coats over Ulta3 Spring Break.

I remember when Ulta3 released its glitter collection at the end of 2012, and then soon after Picture Polish released a very similar collection of glitters. Gene Doll from Picture Polish was the only solid colour glitter that wasn't matched with an Ulta3 version.  Not anymore.  Here are some quick bottle comparisons, the Ulta3 has a higher glitter payoff, and its glitters are slightly larger than Gene Doll.  The Ulta3 also has more reflective curled glitters, but as you can see, they are not an issue on the nail.

Show Stopper -  Silver and yellow gold hexes in two sizes in a clear base.  Some reflective curling but smooth under one layer of top coat.  This is two coats over Ulta3 Glamour Puss.

A lister - Aqua blue glitters in three sizes in a clear base.  This is two coats over Ulta3 Get Teal.

When I bought this one I thought it would be a total dupe of one of the Ulta3 glitters from last year, new years eve, but as it turns out, a lister is slightly more green that new years eve.  Picture Polish ariel's tale is even greener still, so no identical dupes here.

Stop the press - Matte black and white glitters in two sizes in a white base.  I did a bit of nail art with this one.  I created a gradient with Ulta3 Lily white and black satin and then applied two coats of stop the press.  The feature nail is Lily white, stamped in black using Vivid Lacquer plate VL004.  I'm pretty chuffed with myself for getting the Lorem Ipsum straight, I put it down to my new sticky XL stamper I got from Messy Mansion.

Wow - what a collection.  Such a huge variety and amazing to see how indie brands have influenced polishes right down to our awesome little $2 Ulta3's.

The Ulta3 Facebook page has a stockist locator for Australia, so that's probably your best bet for finding them.

I purchased this collection from my local chemist, then a week later I received the full collection from Ulta3 to review.  So guess what?  I'm giving away the full collection to one lucky Australian reader.  To have a chance to win I'm looking for some creative haiku's.

To make your entry valid, the haiku must include one of the polish names from this collection.  Just add your haiku in the comments section below.

Here is an example of an entry:
More nail mail arrived
Better get it outasight
Must go on no buy
Australian entries only sorry - I'm not prepared to risk sending eleven bottles of nail polish overseas.  It would weigh more than 500grams and would be scanned, so I just can't risk the fine.

You can enter as many times as you like and I will pick my favourite one for the winner.  Closes midnight AEST Sunday night - 7 July 2013.

Go.
