My Nail Care Essentials

I've had loads of questions about how I look after my nails lately, so I've decided now is the time to dedicate a post to it. I am, admittedly, very lucky when it comes to my nails. I was blessed with very long nail beds and barely a hint of a cuticle. Therefore, I really don't do THAT much to take care of my nails, but here I'll share with you exactly what it is I do!

Click the jump to see!

Before I start, please note that the purchasing information I've included is just a guide from a quick snoop around Google...if you decide to buy, it's always best to shop around yourself first!

Everybody knows a base coat is essential to help prevent staining, but which one to use? My absolute must-have is OPI Original Nail Envy. I used to get split nails all the time before I discovered this product, and since using it my broken nails are virtually non-existent and it's also made them much stronger. I use Nail Envy 99% of the time.

The other base coat I sometimes use is Essie Ridge Filling Base Coat. I tend to use this when I'm swatching lots of polishes at once, so as not to waste my Nail Envy.

Where to purchase?

OPI Original Nail Envy (15ml):
UK - Amazon - Boots (Much cheaper on Amazon).
US - Ulta - Amazon

Essie Ridge Filling Base Coat (15ml):
US - Ulta

A good top coat prevents chipping and promotes staying power! I'd recommend investing in a quick dry top coat, such as Sally Hansen Insta-Dri, because nobody enjoys smudges or fabric imprints! It's also very helpful if you're doing nail art which involves striping tape or stamping, as you can dry your base in seconds so it won't be ruined by the stamper or the tape.

Another good top coat is NYC In A New York Color Minute, which I first discovered on The Nailasaurus. It's not as quick drying as the Sally Hansen, but it's super glossy and my manicures last a long time when I use this.

Where to purchase?

Sally Hansen Insta-Dri:
US: Amazon - Target

NYC In A New York Color Minute:
UK: Superdrug
US: I've been told that Target stocks NYC.

Ah, cuticles. They can be the bane of your life. Firstly I will say don't ever cut your cuticles! It's dangerous and it's not a good look.

The stuff in the white bottle is Blue Cross Cuticle Remover, and it works wonders! As I've said, I'm lucky with my cuticles so I rarely use this, but now and again they get a little dry and flaky so I apply a little bit to the cuticle, leave for a minute or so and rub off with a cotton bud. Be sure to wash your hands after use! Note - Blue Cross doesn't come in the bottle pictured. This was sent to me by my friend Melissa and she put it in an empty polish bottle for me.

You've probably heard of Lush's Lemony Flutter before! It's a lovely rich lemon-scented butter that will leave your cuticles soft and moisturised. It's quite greasy so I tend to apply this before bed. Massage it into your cuticles, a little goes a long way!

Where to purchase?

Blue Cross Cuticle Remover:
UK - Availability seems to be difficult here. You can purchase it on Amazon, but delivery is £20! One bottle does last a long time but I'm not sure anyone would want to pay that! Delivery is slightly cheaper on eBay, but you might be better asking a friend in the US to send you some. If you have better luck finding this, let me know!

Lush Lemony Flutter Cuticle Butter (50g):
UK: Lush

Frequent moisturisation is so important in nail care, I can't say it enough! As well as keeping your hands soft, it'll help keep your cuticles soft and your nails healthy. I moisturise my hands a good few times a day, especially after a shower.

OPI Avojuice is my absolute favourite hand lotion. It feels light and silky, absorbs fast and leaves no residue. The one I'm using at the moment, Hibiscus Blossom, smells divine! The reason the bottle looks so tiny is because It's a 30ml sample size. I usually try a small one first to make sure I like the smell before I buy a big bottle!

Where to purchase?

OPI Avojuice:
UK - Lena White (you could try eBay, some have free delivery)
US - Ulta

Lastly, it's filing time! There's loads of different shapes you could file your nails into, it all comes down to personal preference. I prefer to keep mine square with rounded off edges. As of yet I don't have a more detailed post on how I shape my nails, but I will get around to it eventually!

I use a QVS glass nail file to shape them. I prefer glass files because they feel a lot less rough on the nails, plus they last longer. Mine is just a regular glass file that I found in Superdrug.

I also use a Ms.Manicure buffing block to seal the tips of my nails after I've filed them. I sometimes smooth them down too if they're feeling a bit ridgy. I don't use this to file my nails.

Where to purchase?

You can find glass files pretty much anywhere, as I said I got mine from Superdrug but I've also seen them in Boots. The Ms.Manicure buffing block is from Boots.

There we have it! I hope this goes some way to helping you in your nail care quest! If you start to look after your nails properly, you really will see a big difference after a little while.

My Nail Care Favourites

If I had a penny for every time someone asked how I care for my nails, I'd probably have a whole pound by now. The only reason I haven't made a post like this sooner is because I'm really not big in to nail care and I know very little about it so I don't really feel qualified to instruct anyone on the subject. Truth is I'm just a lucky SOB when it comes to my nails and cuticles, they don't need much taking care of so I never made much of an effort.
That's not to say I don't do anything at all to care for them, just very little. In this post, I'll share my brief nail care routine with you in the hope that some of you curious cats can take a few pointers.

The best advice I can give anyone trying to keep their nails strong is find a good base coat.
I never used base coat until I won a bottle of OPI Nail Envy in a giveaway back in October 2010 and started using it underneath every manicure. I saw an improvement within 2 weeks. My nails were stronger, less prone to breakages and grew at double speed.
Since then I've tried a couple of different base coats but I always come back to OPI Nail Envy. Both the Original and Matte formulas do the same job. Recently I've also been using a Sally Hansen base coat, I've never been let down by any of their strengtheners.

Where to buy:
Sally Hansen Green Tea and Bamboo Strengthener 13.3ml...
In the UK: Superdrug (£7.99), Boots (£7.95)
In the US: Ulta ($7.79), Target ($6.99)
Search for: 'Sally Hansen Green Tea Bamboo'

OPI Nail Envy 15ml...
In the UK: Boots (£18.65), Sallys (In Store Only), Amazon.co.uk (£10.31)
In the US: Amazon.com ($7.95)
Search for: 'Nail Envy Original' or 'Nail Envy Matte'

So many of you are curious about how I get me nail shape. All I do is use one snip of the nail clippers to trim my nails to a square shape, then a glass nail file to smooth the edges and round off the corners slightly. I wrote a full post about it trimming and shaping my nails here.
These tools are the least fancy ones you'll ever find! The clippers are from Primark and the file is from Tesco's Barbara Daly make up range. They've both been with me for years and I'd be lost without them!
When it comes to glass nail files, some are better than others. I discovered this when I attempted to replace mine and the replacement was absolutely rubbish. It just didn't seem to actually file my nails so it went straight in the bin. I don't have any recommendations on this one, sorry guys.

My cuticles are naturally quite healthy and I moisturise my hands using Vaseline's Essential Moisture lotion countless times a day which I think contributes to my overall hand health in a big way.
This product from Sally Hansen is called Cuticle Eraser and Balm* and it's supposed to 'remove dry cuticles and moisturise in one step'. I don't think it works well as a remover but it leaves my cuticles feeling super soft. I'm a reformed nail picker but sometimes the habit sneaks out and I end up taking it out on my right thumbnail and the skin around it, this is the only product that has helped to heal that mess of a finger and return the skin and cuticle to a respectable state.
I've heard that Lush's Lemony Flutter is a great cuticle product but I've never tried it myself. It's on my bucket list!

Where to buy Sally Hansen Cuticle Eraser and Balm
In the UK: This product was sent to me by Sally Hansen and I can't find it available anywhere in the UK yet.
In the US: Walgreens ($7.99), Ulta, Target
Search for: 'Sally Hansen Cuticle Eraser Balm'

While not really anything to do with nail care, top coats are a valuable part of my manicure routine nonetheless. My favourites are Essence Better Than Gel Nails and Seche Vite.
The Seche Vite is quite new to me and I only purchased it because it was an absolute bargain in the Urban Outfitters sale. It's a very, very fast drying top coat but it 'shrinks' sometimes which is incredibly annoying. It's exactly what it sounds like. The Seche shrinks, pulling away from your cuticles and nail tips and takes your colour polish with it, leaving gaps where there shouldn't be. If you can overlook that, it's awesome.

If the Essence top coat was available here in the UK, I would use nothing else. Unfortunately, it's only available in Continental Europe so it's tricky for anyone not living there to get hold of. It's fast drying (although not as fast as Seche Vite), glossy and it lasts. Please click here for more info about the Essence top coat (and every other top coat I've used in the past!).

Where to buy:
Seche Vite
In the UK: Asos (£10.95) Feel Unique (£8.76), Amazon.co.uk (£6.19)
In the US: Ulta ($9.95) Amazon.com ($5.13)

Essence Better Than Gel Nails
Only available in continental Europe and I believe the retail price is €2.59 for a 10ml bottle. A fellow blogger was kind enough to send me a few bottles.

That concludes my nail care favourites. I hope this is helpful and answers any questions you may have had about how I care for my nails. What are your nail care essentials?

DIY: Make your own Gentle Remover: Nail Care

How many of you balk in disgust at the sight of white, fraying dry skin after you use a Nail Polish remover? Or run to splosh moisturizer on your cuticles?

I may have a solution to help your cuticles feel better!

I know we get Acetone free removers, but they take years/ages to make to polish come off.
Acetone is a good solution to that, but it dries ur skin! And How!!!

I was searching to buy a nice nail polish remover that doesnt try to kill my cuticles and I chanced upon this DIY Gentle remover. Its made on the lines of Zoya's Remove Plus Nail Polish Remover.

Essentially you use acetone coz its very effective to remove nail polish, but add the goodness of glycerin to make sure that acetone doesnt harm your cuticles.

Ready to make it? (if you said oh yeah!!! read further!
if you already made it, please give your suggestions/tips on how to make this better.)

__________________________________________________________________

Reader Q: What Do I need?
A: A bottle, Glycerin, Pure Acetone and filtered water

Reader Q: Is it gonna be an expensive affair?
A: Nope. 100g glycerin costs Rs.45/- ($0.9) and Pure Acetone costs me Rs: 84 for 400 ml. Water is freeeeeee freeee freeeeee LoL!!

Q: Do I need an empty bottle?
A: Depends if there is room in your acetone bottle you can use that...or just clean out any used up container of a body lotion or body wash/hand lotion etc. The container you are mixing into must be see through. Or you wont know how much to mix.

Q: Ok, I got an empty bottle.. now what?
Put as much acetone as you want..leave room to add and mix other stuff. I have taken an old bottle of M&S body lotion and clean it out with water and soap. I like a bottle with pump for acetone. Makes it easier to use. You may want to try a bit first instead of mixing the whole acetone.

Q: How much Glycerin to add?
A: Take Glycerin in the cap of the bottle and add to acetone. You'll see glycerin plonk straight to the bottom of the bottle. Now mix it hard by closing the bottle and give it a shake. The glycerin is soluble in acetone, but not beyond a point.

Q: What is Glycerin?
"A versatile liquid listed as safe for human consumption by the Food and Drug Administration, glycerine is viscous, colorless, and has a slightly sweet taste. Food and drug makers use it in everything from candies to toothpaste." Source

This is bottle before the glycerin was mixed up.
Keep adding Glycerin and shaking it till you see that glycerin doesnt mix anymore. So its helpful to keep mixing as you add along.

Q: Okayyyy,  the glycerin doesnt mix anymore. Now what?
A: Fret not even if you dont get this exact. I had added roughly 4 capfuls of glycerin without shaking it up.

Now close the bottle and mix hard. If you have any extra glycerin that wont mix into the acetone it will get mixed as you add water. See, glycerin is completely soluble in water. (bet u didnt know that..haha).
I'd suggest you should add little water little by little and shake it out and see if the glycerin has got mixed.

Now you wont be able to see any distinguished separation in the bottle.

Q: Managed that without spilling any of this mixture in my eye.
A: Now use it and come back here and tell me how it worked for you :p

I still have 1/3rd of the acetone bottle left and more than 3/4th of the glycerin left for future use.

Some more FAQs:
Q: This feels slightly sticky!!
A: Thats coz there is more glycerin in the mixture. My first batch was slightly sticky, but then I didnt really mind the sticky-ness as it just as easily comes off with washing your hands in soap water. (which I would normally do after using a nail polish remover anyways). I am happy to not see any more dried, white cuticles.

Q: My cuticles still feel dry!!
A: Add more glycerin. Glycerin has properties to retain moisture from the air around it.

I've read a post about this from Anutka on her blog :Wacky Laki and then made it myself the first time.
You can check her post here. She has a cool blog!!
